Stupidity Approaching Infinity [LMAO]

Posted by damnedviper | | 0 comments »

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. (Albert Einstein)
I remember my good old days when i was a kid, i had my friend believed that every human has three eyes. The third one at the back of his head underneath the hair (lolz). I also convinced him that he was blinded from the third.
I stumbled across some really stupid yet hilariously funny stuff. Its some IRC conversation between two people. Here is how it goes:

<Cthon98> yep, no matter how many times you type hunter2, it will show to us as *******
<AzureDiamond> awesome!
<AzureDiamond> wait, how do you know my pw?
<Cthon98> er, I just copy pasted YOUR ******'s and it appears to YOU as hunter2 cause its your pw
<AzureDiamond> oh, ok.

There is some more

<by> Is there anyway I can tell the world I'm an idiot?

Transferring Widgets to New Blogger Template [Tutorial]

Posted by damnedviper | | 2 comments »

Replacing a blogger template without losing the widget data is slightly complicated for the beginners but still not a difficult job. For this we have to create a temporary space or trunk for your widgets (which are also called Page Elements) within your current template, place your widgets in that section, copying the code and pasting it in the new template, uploading the new template and finally we have to rearrange the widgets.
To start off, lets go to Blogger Dashboard and select the blog you want to edit. After doing that click Layout tab and select Edit Html.

Now for . Look for the following piece of code which is all the way at the bottom.

</body></html>

Now you’re going to replace this code with the following :

<b:section id='widgets-trunk' showaddelement='yes'/>
</body></html>

Save your template. If you have done it right then you have created a section at the bottom of the template.
Now goto " Page Elements " and drag drop the widgets into your new section. This section basically creates a backup trunk for you widgets. See the picture for reference

After doing the above, save it. Congratulations, you have completed half of the task which was supposed to be the harder one. Now lets go to the " Edit Html " sub-tab again and find for this piece of code

<b:section id='widgets-trunk' showaddelement='yes'>

Now there should be some more code under this. For instance, in my case:

<b:section id='widgets-trunk' showaddelement='yes'>

<b:widget id='BlogArchive1' locked='false' title='Blog Archive' type='BlogArchive'/>

<b:widget id='Profile1' locked='false' title='About Me' type='Profile'/>

</b:section></body></html>

This is a list of all your widgets (Page Elements) that we just moved into the bottom section. You want to select all this code and copy it. We’re going to paste it into our new Blogger template code which will complete the transfer safely.
Now open your new Blogger template xml file in a text editor (you can use Notepad, just right click -> Open With -> Choose Notepad). Once you have it open, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the code and look for the following code:

</body></html>

You’re going to replace this code with the new code you just copied above. It is advised that you should not alter anything else unless you know what you are doing because otherwise you might mess things up. Save your new Blogger template and upload it through the field provided in the " Edit Html " sub-tab. Now goto the " Page Elements " sub-tab and Drag Drop the widgets where you like on the side bar. Save the template and Voila! you have successfully transferred your widgets without losing the data. Congratulations.

If you want any kind of help regarding this then please comments here.

Reddit Vs Digg: Users Psychology Comparison

Posted by damnedviper | | 8 comments »

I have tried to have a psychological comparison of the users at digg and those at reddit. These comparison are based on the stories submitted and comments by the users.

At first have a look at the level of Reddit users. Many among the Reddit users are school kids

On the contrary, digg has most of its users as office workers or mature bloggers. Similarly, each has its own way of expressing differnce of opinion.

Finally, the thought process is entirely different. Have a look at the comments by reddit users and those by digg users.

I had always liked Digg because of its interface and the quality of news stories and because of the fact that i got my first two or three submissions popular. While reddit on the other hand was not a successful thing for me as i never even got more than one point on my submissions. Generally speaking, the news at reddit were more raw and simple. The voting system at reddit is simply the simplest, you cannot get it more simpler. On the contrary, digg is slightly more biased and spammed.

If you disagree then have the luxury to comment. You may also read my discussion about the reddit bug.

Reddit.com Bug: Single Story Multiple Submissions

Posted by damnedviper | | 0 comments »

Today i tried to add the reddit.com widget to the bottom of the articles for my blog. After adding the code snippet next to the digg button, i tested that whether it is working or not. After submitting it to reddit, i refreshed the page but found the same link in the widget saying submit this to reddit. I again submitted but no change. After submitting it for three times, i finally concluded that there is some bug in the reddit engine which is allowing to post multiple submissions for a single link which should not be the case as stated here:

if the site has not been submitted yet, clicking on the button will take the user to a reddit submit page, otherwise it takes them to the comments page.

My submissions are as follow:
http://www.reddit.com/comments/6t7s4/Criticizing_Propellercom_is_against_its_TOS_duhhttp://www.reddit.com/comments/6t8al/Criticizing_Propellercom_is_against_its_TOS_duhhttp://www.reddit.com/comments/6t8dh/Criticizing_Propellercom_is_against_its_TOS_duh

In short, one can have multiple headline and for a single story and can have more and more exposure. So it is more and more prone to spam. Lets see when reddit staff gets it corrected

Criticizing Propeller.com is against its TOS. duh!

Posted by damnedviper | | 9 comments »

The Propeller.com recent layout change pissed off many of its members. Its bugs, non-user-friendliness, horrible outlook and not issuing user manual created great deal of fuss. People protested by "Proping" the stories complaining the issues. But then the AOL team replied with a big "thank you" and removed those article as a violation of their Terms of Services. Same was the case with my story which was submitted to propeller as this.
then

If the situation continues for a week or so, I am afraid that Propeller.com would become a desolate place. I had been a fan of the previous Propeller which had great members and less spammers but now it has disappointed me and many others.
I suggest that propeller crew should have the option of switching between the older version and the new version if not reverting it back.
Lets see whether the transition of Propeller 2.0 to Propeller 0.0 proves to be successful or a mess.

Propeller.com new layout sucks!!!

Posted by damnedviper | | 30 comments »

I use some social media networks to check out the cool stuff running hot and to find out what interesting things are going on. Among these are, digg, propeller, mixx, del.icio.us etc.
Today morning when i tried to access my account at propeller, it had some strange announcement going on stating about some broadcast. And later that evening, when i tried again, i had a whole new Propeller. At first i thought of it as some cool color combination and a smart design but when i tried to navigate through, i found it really troublesome.
The previous layout was very convenient and easily accessible. Everything was so in proportion and easy to find. Have a look at the previous layout.
But with the new style, first of all my uploaded picture got misplaced (i guess it is misplaced as it is no longer there). Secondly, out of my 500 friends, only 113 are appearing. The other thing which i disliked about it was the points, comments, and submitted stories which used to appear next to a persons name is also not there.

Well, i might be acting a bit wayward or i am just not adjusting to it at the moment. Lets see whether people appreciate this new layout or not. If you also dislike the newer version then please comment here and digg or prop it ( Propping no longer available read this).

Google Algorithm Update: Index your Flash Contents

Posted by damnedviper | | 0 comments »

As we all know that Google is evolving real fast with thousands of people working for improving its algorithm, protection, spam filtering etc. Recently, Google has announced that with the help of its new algorithm, it can crawl through Adobe's Flash based contents.

Adobes's Flash is widely being used in many web-based applications and advertisements. It is used in creating banners, buttons, menus, interactive forms and sections. Previously, the contents in flash were not indexed by Google and therefore it was too difficult for the webmasters to optimize their flash based sites. Although flash used to make the website more attractive but had the drawback of lesser search engine traffic.

But now with the help the new algorithm, Flash based website would be indexed equally as the rest. One thing is for certain that this will bring a great increase in flashed based websites and contents and is expected to change the general layout of the websites. Secondly, the webmasters will lay more stress on the outlook of the websites too. Now the question is when will the arch rival Yahoo be able to index them and include them in its search results?.

Top 20 contributing Factors of Google SEO

Posted by damnedviper | | 0 comments »

About the Author: Jon Bergan is the owner of Bergan Blue, an Australian based creative design firm focused on bridging the gap between the online world of the Internet with the offline world of Marketing. Please visit http://www.berganblue.com.au for more information.

Websites are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways of advertising. Whether it be a business, its product or service or something completely different, everyone of all ages is turning to the web as a method of getting their message out there. With the popularity of this marketing medium increasing and the number of websites always growing, it is obvious that everyone wants to appear at the top of Google's search engine rankings. Achieving such a task is not an easy feat, however with a bit of perseverance, one can definitely improve their chances of reaching that glorious first page result.
Given that there is a heap of websites out there who are on the first page, what is their secret? It is a little industry term called "SEO" and it stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO basically consists of the customization of your website, its content and its internal and external links to assist in the overall indexing and ranking of your website in popular search engines. There are many contributing factors that are used in determining a website's ranking and every search engine is different. This makes trying to optimize your site for Google, Yahoo, Live and the many others quite a painstaking task.

As most of us are aware, Google is currently the most popular search engine for the majority of Internet users. As such, it is only normal that we'd want to focus our sights on achieving a higher ranking within Google first with the hope that the rest will follow. To do this, we must start a journey that could potentially take months before we start seeing any real change, however we have to start somewhere.

Our journey begins by defining some of the key contributing factors that Google uses to determine a website's and webpage's ranking within its results. These factors range from keyword use to manipulating internal and external links and the líst goes on. To get you started, we have listed the top twenty factors that you should focus on in order to help get your website that little bit closer to the top of the search engine results listings.

Keyword Use Factors

The following components relate to the use of search query terms in determining the rank of a particular page.

1. Keyword Use in Title Tag - Placing the targeted search term or phrase in the title tag of the web page's HTML header.

2. Keyword Use in Body Text - Using the targeted search term in the visible, HTML text of the page.

3. Relationship of Body Text Content to Keywords - Topical relevance of text on the page compared to targeted keywords.

4. Keyword Use in H1 Tag - Creating an H1 tag with the targeted search term/phrase.

5.
Keyword Use in Domain Name & Page URL - Including the targeted term/phrase in the registered domain name, i.e. keyword.com plus target terms in the webpage URL, i.e. seomoz.org/keyword-phrase.

Page Attributes

The following elements comprise how Google interprets specific data about a webpage independent of keywords.

6. Link Popularity within the Site's Internal Link Structure - Refers to the number and importance of internal links pointing to the target page.

7. Quality/Relevance of Links to External Sites/Pages - Do links on the page point to high quality, topically-related pages?

8. Age of Document - Older pages may be perceived as more authoritative while newer pages may be more temporarily relevant.

9. Amount of Indexable Text Content - Refers to the literal quantity of visible HTML text on a page.

10. Quality of the Document Content (as measured algorithmically) - Assuming search engines can use text, visual or other analysis methods to determine the validity and value of content, this metric would provide some level of rating.

Site/Domain Attributes

The factors below contribute to Google's rankings based on the site/domain on which a page resides.

11. Global Link Popularity of Site - The overall link weight/authority as measured by links from any and all sites across the web (both link quality and quantity).

12. Age of Site - Not the date of original registration of the domain, but rather the launch of indexable content seen by the search engines (note that this can change if a domain switches ownership).

13. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links to Site - The subject-specific relationship between the sites/pages linking to the target page and the target keyword.

14. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community - The link weight/authority of the target website amongst its topical peers in the online world.

15. Rate of New Inbound Links to Site - The frequency and timing of external sites linking in to the given domain.

Inbound Link Attribute

These pieces affect Google's weighting of links from external websites pointing to a page and ultimately will assist in the ranking of that page.

16. Anchor Text of Inbound Link.

17. Global Link Popularity of Linking Site.

18. Topical Relationship of Linking Page.

19. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community - The link weight/authority of the target website amongst its topical peers in the online world.

20. Age of Link.

Negative Crawling/Ranking Attributes

There are also some points we should make before you start getting your hands dirty. With any type of SEO marketing, there are some things that can actually have a negative impact on your ranking. These following components may negatively affect a spider's ability to crawl a page or its rankings at Google.

  • Server is Often Inaccessible to Bots.
  • Content Very Similar or Duplicate of Existing Content in the Index.
  • External Links to Low Quality/Spam Sites.
  • Duplicate Title/Meta Tags on Many Pages.
  • Overuse of Targeted Keywords (Stuffing/Spamming).
It's now time to get busy! Start prioritizing your tasks, modifying your content and building your internal and external links to meet some of the above guidelines. Keep in mind that improving indexing is mostly a technical task and improving ranking is mostly a business/marketing strategy. What might work now may not work in the future and finally, it takes time. Loads of time. Still, with a bit of trial and error and a good dose of persistence, you can achieve the search engine ranking you're after.

How to Promote your links

Posted by damnedviper | | 2 comments »

In order to promote your links, your main goal should be getting targeted traffíc to your site and any link PR should be secondary. Always put the reader or viewer first, especially if it's on someone else's site. Don't talk about your site or your marketing - just join the conversation and add your comments/opinions/suggestions... Enhance their site and they will reward you with traffic and a link. But you still have to keep your interests in the equation! You have to make sure you get your targeted keywords in the anchor text.

Keyword Market

First, if you've done your homework, your main keywords should already be in your domain name or url. Another way is to add your "keywords" + "guide" to your sig or signature. Such as: Name, Your Antique Cars Guide. If you're an expert in your particular niche, many webmasters will kindly welcome your comments and links.

Since your main goal is the traffic, many webmasters don't worry if there is a "no follow" attribute attached to the link. But if you are concerned about this - one way is to look at the source code to see if it has the "no follow" tag. I usually copy the whole source code of the page to my text editor and then do a simple "no follow" search.

No Follow

There is also a great little free comment tool called "Comment Kahuna" co-created by Jason Potash which will search blogs and tell you if they have the "no-follow" attribute or not, it will also give you the PageRank of each blog post. If you're going to use blogs as a source of your backlinks, I suggest you try Comment Kahuna - it will make the task much easier and it's free.

Actually, while the "no-follow" issue may be a concern for some webmasters, the savvy ones will realize these are links/sites Google is actively indexing and spidering, otherwise you wouldn't get the alert in the first place. You must get your links into this whole mix of related, relevant sites to help raise your rankings. Also remember the other search engines may not even consider the "no-follow" tag.

Trackbacks

Likewise, creating trackbacks are another way of linking relevant content. Keep in mind, a trackback is simply an acknowledgement via a ping signal that is sent from Site A (originator) to Site B (receptor). Then the receptor often places a link back to Site A showing its worthiness.
Again, I am mainly concerned with the quality of the blog or link, rather than the linking structure. I want the targeted traffíc, and it doesn't really matter whether the link has "no follow" because interested visitors only see a link they can click for other helpful information.

Other Linking Options

Since we are on the topic of link building, another useful way to build backlinks is to use Google Search or Google Blog search. Now if you're looking for niche-related blogs just type in:

"(Keywords)" "powered by (blog scripts)"

For example, if you're looking for some "antique cars" related links on WordPress blogs, you would search for:
"antique cars" "powered by wordpress"
And Google would give you a whole líst of sites on antique cars.
Now if you want to find the links that will allow comments, just repeat the Google search with:
"antique cars" "powered by wordpress" "leave a comment" -"no comments"
Remember the "-" means posts that have no comments will not be displayed. If you're concerned with PageRank, Number of Backlinks, Alexa Ranking... of particular posts you can download and install the SEOQuake plugin. This handy SEO plugin can be attached to your browser and will give you helpful SEO information on the link or links you're viewing.
Used in conjunction with Google, it can sort thru all these blog posts and give you the ones with the highest PR? Highest traffic? Highest number of backlinks? The more knowledge you have, the easier and more effective your link building will become.

Please see my post regarding commenting for more information.

What is Link Weight?

Posted by damnedviper | | 0 comments »

It is a common practice that people follow the things which they have been referred to. Same is the case with the search engines. The more websites talk about your particular page and with a particular keyword, the greater would be your link weight and so would be the authority.
In fact, link weight defines your position in search results for a particular keyword.
Again there are other factors as well but link weight is a prominent one. So, the rule of the thumb is that refer to your posts frequently in order to increase the link weight; but this does not imply linking on every page because it may be treated as spam.

An unexpected error has occured while configuring the Network Bridge

Posted by damnedviper | | 11 comments »

Recently, I had troubles bridging my two networks. Whenever i tried to bridge my network adapters, i had an error message saying "An unexpected error has occured while configuring the Network Bridge".

Even after spending couple of hours, i was not able to find a worthwhile solution. Frustratedly, I decided that there would be something associated with it which might be causing the problem. So i started tracing out how the bridges are formed and what are their requirements. Microsoft explains it here. So for having a network bridge, firstly, i had to disable my Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). But when i looked for ICS for my network adapters, it showed that Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) has gone corrupt. The Microsoft said that I had two options for this.
1. Restore my system to a Previous State.
2. Repair my windows installation.

This was cumbersome. So i searched for some alternatives and found in some discussion forum. It said that the fixing of WMI is quite easy if Event Log, a service, is running. You can check it by typing msconfig on your run dialog and then selecting the services tab. Search for Event Log and see its status. If its not running then it means that you have to go through the repairing process. If it is running then the fix is simple. Just open a command prompt and browse to %systemroot%\system32\wbem\repository. Then type del *.* and then del FS. This will delete the WMI repository and force it rebuilt on the next boot.

So reboot and then select the two networks adapters and there you go. You have a brand new Network Bridge.

Troubleshooting Home and Domestic Problems [comedy]

Posted by damnedviper | | 0 comments »

Following is an extract of an email forwarded to me which i found hilariously funny.

1. If you’re choking on an ice cube, simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat. Presto! The blockage will instantly remove itself.

2. Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold the vegetables while you chop.

3. For high blood pressure sufferers ~ simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure on your veins. Remember to use a timer.

4. A mouse trap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

5. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then you’ll be afraid to cough.

6. You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn’t move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn’t move and does, use the duct tape.

7. Remember - everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

8. If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.

Daily thought: some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.

Rapidshare.com Changing Policies: Will it help the Premium Account Holders?

Posted by damnedviper | | 1 comments »

Rapidshare.com had been going through a lot of changes lately. Firstly the whole layout was changed and then it started changing its policies. Although most of the changes are benifitting the users but some might be troublesome.

Here is the old layout of Rapidshare.com Premium Login Page:
The new layout is like

Its quite impressive that they have increased the download restriction from 25Gb in 5 days to 50Gb in 5 days which requires more than a 1 Mbps connection at the user end to reach. This is a really good news for the leechers.

For those seeking a free rapidshare premium account, they have added a new feature called Rapidshare Points PU i.e. the rapidshare point earned through premium users. Now even the premium users contribute towards points collection though its restricted to 255 points per day.

So Rapidshare is evolving and lets hope that its evolution favours the users.

EDIT: I have noticed that rapidshare is allowing upto 200Mb of split archives which can be downloaded by free users as well. Previously there was a limit of 2 Gb of file size and that only could be downloaded by Premium users. Regular split archives were of 100Mb. Here is the screen shot

Clearly They have not updated is completely as seen from here.

I have also heard that they have restricted downloading to only one IP per account at a time. I have not tested it yet but will update later.

Commenting, The Lesser Known Secret of Promoting your Blog

Posted by damnedviper | | 0 comments »

Yes, this is right. Not a lot many people value the worth of the comments published on other blogs and this is because they undermind the vitality associated to it. The comments to an article not only bring you traffic but also improve the search engine ranking of the link. This is because of the fact that if the blog post is indexed by the search engine, then so would be the comment and in this way you get a free link back to your post.
As mentioned before, comments have their importance in two prespectives;
1. They bring you direct traffic
2. They improve the value of the link for the search engines.
As far as direct traffic is concerned, people do tend to read comments and do click the links mentioned if they find it worthwhile. Darren Rowse of Problogger.net had done a quite a comprehesive analysis of the clicking tendency of his readers in his podcast. His video can be viewed below:

Unfortunately, this has also become a regular targetting by the spammers. Spammers use bots and comment posting softwares to post irrelevant and unnecessary comments to promote their site. Such comments usually donot have much value as the readers skip it and search engines might ban the site for spamming. You may read more about Dirty Tricks Used by Spammers.

The value of the link is also quite improved when SE spiders find the backlinks from a relevant post. Like for example you have written something about gardening and you have also commented at different blogs of your niche then the ranking of your post regarding gardening will improve as the search engine will find many topics related to gardening linking back to you.
Being relevant to topic is quite necessary for this particular factor because the advanced algorithm which the search engines use nowadays will not value much a link to gardening in a autosport post than that in gardening itself. You should also not post irrelevant comments as it harms your reputation. This is quite evident at the social networking sites like digg.
Again it is not necessary that your every comment should contain a link. The point is you should write something useful whether it is positive or negative.

So, the jist of the post is that you should comment to the relevant blog post because it not only promotes your website but also brings you free traffic. Also it is a part of blog ethics that you should comment to posts you like or dislike.
